This one is one of my favorites. The feel I was trying
to get came across perfectly. The cross is a metaphor, but
serves a real purpose; a sort of regeneration module.
His entire existence by this point is about inflicting
pain on himself...and on other people who are like what
he used to be. His sado-masochistic vigilanteism is motivated
by a profound sense of guilt over the things he had done
before his "death". Inflicting suffering on himself
eases this guilt and makes him feel better.
